Books & Treats: A Halloween Celebration for Literacy and Community Safety

The Institute of Research for Social Justice in Action (IRSJA), in partnership with One Hood Wens, the City of Birmingham’s Office of Community Safety Initiatives, and Miles College, hosted the Books & Treats Literacy Celebration at Birmingham’s Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.

More than 400 families came out for a fun-filled Halloween event that promoted reading, peace, and community connection—using literacy as a tool for violence prevention and neighborhood unity.
